Spend a week in Makassar during the dry months and the thermometer barely leaves 27-29 degrees, humidity sits near 80 per cent, and the December-to-April rains can still drop more than 300 mm in a single month. That climate flips the usual buying order. Somewhere cooler, a family saves for the sauna first and adds a cold plunge later, if ever; here, the plunge is the first call after a lap of the Losari seafront or an evening session at one of the padel courts that keep opening around the city, while the timber cabin becomes the thing you reach for once the sun is down. Head up into Gowa toward Malino and the pattern reverses again - at 10-16 degrees, the sauna goes back to being the whole point of the drive.
What a house looks like decides what it can run. The three-storey terraces packed onto narrow lots in Panakkukang, Hertasning and Pettarani are almost always wired for 5,500 VA, so the choice at survey stage is usually between an infrared sauna at 1.7-2.4 kW that needs nothing extra, or a PLN upgrade we price into the quote before you commit to anything larger. Closer to the water, the flat roofs of Tanjung Bunga and the CPI reclamation suit an outdoor cabin with its own pitched cover far better than an indoor build, while the wider blocks out toward Tamalanrea, BTP, Daya and Sudiang usually have room for a cabin and a cold plunge sharing the same stretch of deck.
The third factor is where the city sits on the map. Makassar is the transhipment point for everything moving further east - excellent if you are shipping cargo out, expensive if you are waiting on a finished cabin coming in. A supplier based in Java puts your panels on a boat for five to nine days, charges freight by the kilogram, then still needs to fly two technicians in whenever something needs attention. We stopped being that supplier: panels are cut and assembled here in Panakkukang, Harvia and Sawo heaters sit on our own shelf alongside chillers and spare parts, and the crew that installs a cabin is the one that comes back for it. Hotels near Losari, venues along the Tanjung Bunga road and gyms on Jalan Pengayoman have all made the same call - build local, service local.
Sauna Makassar builds for family homes first, then for the hotels, event spaces, clinics and gyms that ask for the same rooms at a larger scale, across the city, Gowa and Maros. As a starting point: a dry sauna begins around IDR 60 million, infrared from IDR 30 million, a steam room from IDR 50 million, and a cold plunge with its chiller from IDR 45 million, with on-site work running two to four weeks.

On site this runs 2-4 weeks for a home sauna, 1-2 days for an infrared cabin, 1-2 weeks for a cold plunge, or 4-8 weeks for a commercial room.
Before any paperwork is finalised, we run the cabin to full temperature and the plunge down to its set point with you standing right there.
The structure carries a two-year warranty, the heater one to two years from its maker, and if anything needs a look, it is the same crew that built it who comes back.
What actually keeps a cabin alive on this coastline
Every wall goes up in five layers: panel, 50 mm rockwool, foil vapour barrier, a ventilated 20 mm gap and the cedar you actually see. Coastal air here hovers around 80 per cent humidity, and a wall built without the foil or the gap grows mould behind the boards in two or three seasons.
We read your meter before we talk timber. A four-seat cabin on a 6 kW heater is comfortable from 7,700 VA, an eight-seat room wants 11,000 VA, and a Hertasning cluster still on 5,500 VA is usually better served by a 1.7-2.4 kW infrared cabin than by a PLN application. The heater always gets its own SiHF run, breaker and ELCB.
Larch or thermowood tub with a liner inside, a half-to-one HP chiller keeping the water anywhere from 3 to 15 degrees, ozone or UV filtration, and a drain sized to actually empty it.
Western red cedar, Scandinavian spruce or thermowood line the cabin, with aspen or abachi for the benches. Ulin and bengkirai are reserved for the decking outside and never make it through the door.

Questions we get in Makassar
Does a sauna push the electricity bill up much in weather this warm?
Less than most people expect, because the enclosure is built to hold heat rather than fight the outside air. A dry sauna typically adds IDR 200,000-500,000 a month at three or four sessions a week, an infrared cabin IDR 100,000-250,000, and a cold plunge chiller IDR 300,000-700,000 since it works hardest during dry-season afternoons. We size the connection at survey stage so there are no surprises on the first PLN bill.
If a part fails, how long before someone from your side turns up?
Because we hold heaters, chillers, stones and spare elements on our own shelf in Panakkukang, a service visit is scheduled in days, not booked around a flight from Jakarta or a shipment from Surabaya. Most call-outs inside Makassar itself happen within a day or two of the message.
Is a proper chiller worth it over just filling the tub with ice?
For anything used more than a handful of times, yes. A half-to-one HP chiller holds the water at a set point between 3 and 15 degrees continuously, while bagged ice melts within the hour in this climate and has to be bought and hauled in every session. Count the ice runs and the chiller is usually the cheaper habit inside a year.
We are fitting out a padel club or gym - can rooms be sized for members, not one household?
Yes, and it is a growing share of what we build as padel courts and fitness studios keep opening across the city. Commercial rooms are sized for duty cycle rather than one evening of use, with heaters, benches and ventilation built accordingly, starting at an indicative IDR 150 million over four to eight weeks.
In a shared tub, does the water stay clean between users?
It does if the filtration is doing its job. Ours runs cartridge filtration with ozone or UV, which is what lets us change the water every three to four weeks instead of daily, even on a tub several people use each evening.
Does the wet season slow a build down, especially up toward Malino?
Not the fabrication - panels, benches and heaters are all made indoors in our Panakkukang workshop regardless of weather. The one adjustment is the Malino road itself, where we combine the materials trip with the installation visit from December through April so a muddy climb does not happen twice.
