Ice bath Makassar: a cold plunge that holds its temperature
A timber plunge whose chiller is sized for Makassar afternoons, not a catalogue: we have fitted them on seafront rooftops, in gyms and in physio clinics across the city.
An ice bath in Makassar means a timber cold plunge fitted with a half-to-one HP chiller that holds the water anywhere from 3 to 15 degrees, plus filtration and a proper drain. We build these for houses, gyms, clinics and hotels alike, at an indicative IDR 45-90 million installed, one to two weeks on site.
Why the plunge gets ordered before the sauna here
Because the city does not need any help getting hot. Most places in Indonesia buy the sauna first and add a plunge later; here the order is reversed from the start. Finish a run along the Losari promenade at seven in the morning and you are still looking at 29 degrees and 80 per cent humidity, and three minutes at 10 degrees is the fastest way to actually bring core temperature back down. Gyms on Jalan Pengayoman and clinics around Panakkukang were the first to ask for an ice bath before anything else, with houses in Tanjung Bunga and Tamalanrea following soon after.
That reversal has a real engineering cost. A plunge somewhere cooler can coast along most of the time; here it sits in air that climbs to 32-33 degrees during the dry season, so the chiller is working around the clock. Getting the sizing right, insulating both the tub and the pipework, and fitting a lid are what separate water sitting at 8 degrees from water drifting up to 18.
What is actually inside a build: tub, chiller, filtration
The tub itself is larch or thermowood built over a food-grade liner, sized from 1.6x0.8 m for one person up to 2x1.2 m for two. Closed-cell insulation sits underneath, and we insulate the pipework running to the plant as well, since a bare hose sitting in direct sun can undo a third of the cooling on its own.
- A half-to-one HP chiller holding whatever set point you choose, anywhere from 3 to 15 degrees.
- Cartridge filtration backed by ozone or UV, which stretches a water change out to every three or four weeks instead of every week.
- An insulated lid - the single cheapest upgrade for holding temperature, and the one people skip most often to save money.
- A drain, a floor fall toward it, and a hose point nearby, so draining the tub is a five-minute task rather than a production.
For a plunge standing outdoors near the coast, in Tanjung Bunga or at CPI, we spec corrosion-resistant fittings and shade the condenser as standard, because salt air and unbroken afternoon sun will both cut short how long a compressor lasts.
Power supply and where the tub actually goes
Electrically this is a light job: a chiller pulls 0.5-1 kW, so a 5,500 VA house needs no PLN upgrade whatsoever, which is exactly why an ice bath tends to be the first wellness item a cluster house in Hertasning or Sudiang commits to. It still gets a dedicated breaker, an ELCB and a soft start on the compressor, so it does not trip the board the moment it cuts in alongside the air conditioning.
Placement ends up mattering more than the electrics. On a rooftop we check the floor load with the tub full of water, on a terrace we look for shade and a drain point, and in a gym we route it so wet feet stay off the free-weight floor. Installation timeline, running cost and upkeep
From delivery of the tub, installation takes one to two weeks. Expect IDR 300,000-700,000 a month in electricity depending on the set point, the volume and how consistently the lid gets used; upkeep is a monthly filter rinse and a water change every three or four weeks. The chiller gets an annual service, carried out by our own crew.
Within a year, most clients add heat to go with it: the dry sauna for a proper contrast session, or the infrared cabin where the power supply is the limiting factor. Every indicative figure, including a chiller supplied alone for a tub you already own, sits on the price page.

Questions we get in Makassar
Does the water need chlorine, or is filtration enough on its own?
Filtration with ozone or UV handles it without chlorine, which is what lets us change the water every three to four weeks instead of daily. If you would still rather run a small chlorine dose as backup, that is a simple add-on, though we do not consider it necessary on a well-filtered tub.
Would it just be simpler to fill a tub with ice instead of installing a chiller?
For an occasional session, maybe. For daily use it stops making sense fast - a chiller holds a set temperature continuously for a predictable IDR 300,000-700,000 a month, while buying and hauling enough ice to chill a 500-litre tub every day costs more within weeks and still will not hold a steady number.
Does the chiller struggle once the dry season hits and afternoons get hotter?
It works harder, not worse. A correctly sized half-to-one HP unit still holds its set point through 32-33 degree afternoons, provided the tub and pipework are insulated and the lid actually gets used between sessions.
If the pump or chiller fails, is that urgent or can it wait?
We treat it as urgent, since standing water without circulation turns cloudy within a day or two in this heat.
