Ice bath / cold plunge

Ice bath Makassar: a cold plunge that holds its temperature

A larch or thermowood tub with a chiller that holds 3-15 degrees, filtration and a proper drain.

An ice bath in Makassar is a timber cold plunge with a half to one HP plunge chiller holding the water between 3 and 15 degrees, filtration and a drain. Built for houses, gyms, clinics and hotels. Indicative IDR 45-90 million installed, one to two weeks on site.

Tub size1.6x0.8 m up to 2x1.2 m
Water temperature3-15 degrees, typically set at 8-12
Power0.5-1 kW, fits 5,500 VA
Lead time1-2 weeks

Why is a cold plunge asked for before a sauna in Makassar?

Because the city is already hot. In most Indonesian cities the sauna is the first purchase and the plunge follows; here the order flips. A run along the Losari promenade at seven in the morning ends at 29 degrees and 80 per cent humidity, and the fastest way to bring core temperature down is three minutes at 10 degrees. Gyms on Jalan Pengayoman and clinics around Panakkukang asked for an ice bath first, and houses in Tanjung Bunga and Tamalanrea followed.

The engineering consequence matters. A plunge in a cool climate can coast; in Makassar it sits in air that reaches 32-33 degrees in the dry season, so the chiller works every hour. Sizing it correctly, insulating tub and pipework and fitting a lid are the difference between water at 8 degrees and water at 18.

What goes into an ice bath: tub, chiller and filtration?

The tub is larch or thermowood over a food-grade liner, sized from 1.6x0.8 m for one person to 2x1.2 m for two. Underneath sits closed-cell insulation, and the pipework between tub and plant is insulated as well, because uninsulated hose in direct sun undoes a third of the cooling.

  • A half to one HP plunge chiller holding a set point anywhere from 3 to 15 degrees.
  • Cartridge filtration with ozone or UV, so the water is changed every three or four weeks rather than weekly.
  • An insulated lid, which is the cheapest cooling upgrade available and the one most often skipped.
  • A drain, a floor fall and a hose point, so emptying the tub is a five-minute job.

Where the plunge stands outdoors near the coast, at Tanjung Bunga or CPI, we specify corrosion-resistant fittings and shade the condenser, because salt air and direct afternoon sun both shorten a compressor's life.

Power and placement in Makassar houses and gyms

The electrical demand is modest: a chiller draws 0.5-1 kW, so a 5,500 VA house needs no PLN upgrade at all, which is why an ice bath is often the first wellness item a cluster house in Hertasning or Sudiang installs. It still gets a dedicated breaker, an ELCB and a soft start on the compressor so it does not trip the board when it cuts in beside the air conditioning.

Placement matters more than power. On a rooftop we check the floor load with the tub full, on a terrace we look for shade and a drain, and in a gym we keep wet feet off the free-weight floor. A commercial recovery zone with a sauna and two plunges starts at an indicative IDR 250 million.

Installation, monthly cost and service

Installation runs one to two weeks from delivery of the tub. Monthly electricity is IDR 300,000-700,000 depending on set point, volume and lid discipline; maintenance means rinsing the filter monthly and changing the water every three or four weeks. Chiller service is annual and done by our own crew.

Most clients pair the plunge with heat within the year: the dry sauna for contrast sessions, or the infrared cabin where the supply is limited. Every indicative figure, including a chiller supplied on its own for an existing tub, is on the price page.

Frequently asked questions

How cold can the water actually be held?

An ice bath here holds between 3 and 15 degrees. For daily household use we set 8-12, which is cold enough for a three-minute session without making it an ordeal; athletes at club level ask for 6-10. The chiller holds the set point continuously rather than cooling on demand.

How often does the water need changing?

Every three to four weeks with filtration and ozone or UV running, and monthly filter rinsing in between. Without filtration you would be emptying it weekly, which in a 900-litre tub is not a habit anyone keeps.

Can the plunge sit outdoors in the wet season?

Yes. The tub is built for it; the chiller wants shade and a small cover, and the condenser must not sit in a puddle. Near the coast we upgrade the fittings against salt air, which is a line in the quote rather than a surprise.

Do you supply a chiller for a tub we already have?

Yes, at an indicative IDR 25-55 million installed, depending on volume and target temperature. Send photographs and the tub dimensions through the contact page and we will size it.
